Resume Tips
A resume is an advertisement of your skills and background. It is a way for you to distinguish yourself to potential employers. So, will they or will they not buy what you are selling?
It is very important to document both your technical skills and functional skills in the resume. This way you can be certain the person reviewing the resume will be able to have a full understanding of your capabilities. Be sure that you can back these skills up and give examples when interviewing. There are so many who do not get hired because of the experience listed on the resume cannot be backed up in an interview.
Make certain to highlight skills that are required and desired for the new position. Again, do not misrepresent yourself. Many people are hired every day that do not have all of the required skills. However, they showed that they had most of the skills needed. This, coupled with a track record of being able to learn new skills quickly, will allow many to get the offer and have the opportunity to learn new skills.
Here are a few tips for your resume:
- Make certain to have a short and to the point objective – Under 10 words is great.
- Be sure to include dates of employment down to the months.
- State your accomplishments/experience in reverse chronological order – most recent experience listed 1st.
- Hiring managers generally like to see bulleted sentences to structure the body of your resume.
- Be certain to have someone review your resume for grammatical and spelling errors. Recruiters and hiring managers see a lot of resumes with these issues and many times set them aside immediately.
